“Sal! How’s it going?” Justin greeted the bouncer outside Babylon with a warm smile.
“Hey Justin- Brian’s already inside....”
“Thanks.” Justin replied rushing through the doors without another glance. He was excited since he had decided to step away from the computer to join his partner at their favorite haunt. Justin scanned the crowd from the catwalk. No sign of his lover. ‘What am I thinking?’ Justin was surprised he had even assumed Brian would be anywhere but the backroom.
“Todd, have you seen Brian?” Justin inquired with the man who knew all the backroom goings on. “No-grunt-i-thrust-havent-grunt- seen-thrust- him-grunt-tonight..”
Justin was starting to get concerned. He stood at the entrance to the backroom and finally thought to check the bathroom. He ventured halfway down the stairs to the dark and hazy restroom when he saw someone lying at the bottom. 'Another tweaked out queen'.... Justin was about to look away when he noticed the denim shirt with rhinestone studded wings detailed right on the shoulderblades. He would have missed the body altogether if the sparkle from the shirt had not caught his eye. “Fuck...”
Justin spoke in a cracked whisper. He rushed down the stairs and stopped suddenly. The young man was afraid to touch the limp body that was on the floor by his feet. He kneeled down and violently shook Brian’s shoulder. Nothing.
“BRIAN!!!” Justin yelled into the man’s ear. “C’mon, C’mon.. SHIT!” He closed his eyes and bit his bottom lip, not really sure what to do. Gently, he rolled Brian over, exposing a gash on his hairline. Justin noticed the remnants of white on his lovers nose, it too was bleeding. Blinking away the tears that were forming, he slid his thumb over Brian’s upper lip, erasing the blood from below his right nostril. One of Justin’s tears dropped onto his hand that was resting on Brian’s chest. He was feeling for a heartbeat, and found only a faint *thud* thud*. Justin’s movements were fast and frantic, but they felt like slow motion. He reached into his pocket and found his cell phone. Dialing, he wondered if Brian was even savable. Justin had no idea how long he was lying on the floor before he found him. Justin hadn’t realized how bad things had become for Brian until that very moment.
Kinnetik had lost several of its higher profile accounts to a brand new firm that had just opened up across town. The president of the company was young and hip, plus completely brilliant. Justin knew this because he was there the day Brian fired him from Kinnetik’s art department. The smaller client list had caused Brian to work harder at keeping his precious accounts. The exhaustion, frustration and hopelessness were far too much for anyone to handle, even Brian.
Guilt overcame Justin for not being there for Brian.... Then or tonight. After hanging up with the emergency response man, Justin threw his phone against the pink tile of the bathroom, causing a few bystanders to jump. The blonde clung to Brian, gripping him tightly until the paramedics arrived.
Chapter Four
“Dr. Mulcahey to the E.R please, Dr. Mulcahey to the E.R.....”
Justin sat back in his chair and rested his head against the wall. He hated hospitals. And he hated waiting in them even more. Brian’s brown leather jacket that he found on the bathroom floor was draped across his lap. The only thing Justin could concentrate on was what the admitting nurse had told him two hours ago.
“Mr. Taylor, your partner has had a drug overdose.” Justin scoffed at the obvious. “ We’re going to have to pump his stomach and give him some adrenaline intravenously to get his heartrate back up. Because he had alcohol in his system, the effects of the overdose are more severe.” Justin gathered Brian’s jacket around his shoulders at the memory of what the nurse had said next. “ Was he a drug user Mr. Taylor?”
“Not regularly-” Justin lied.
After twenty more minutes of waiting, Justin began to pace in front of the row of chairs in the waiting room. Suddenly, a young woman in a white coat came into the doorway. She was clutching a tan folder, which Justin could see, had Brian’s name written on the tab.
“Justin...” The doctor addressed him with confidence and a smile that eased Justin’s fears a bit. “I’m Brian’s E.R. doctor. Dr. Scott. Please, come have a seat...” Dr. Laurel Scott was petite and blonde, presumably around thirty years old. She looked like she could have been Justin’s big sister. The tears and concern in the young man’s eyes was evident as he sat, so Dr. Scott began giving Justin the facts.
“Where do I start-” she flipped open the folder and handed Justin what appeared to be a bar graph detailing a series of tests. “We found traces of sedative drugs called Extorphine, which is used by veterinarians actually, it can cause respiratory arrest. And Fentanyl, which is almost the same as morphine but much stronger. We use it here in the hospital for O.R. patients. I’m quite surprised Brian had this in his system.” For the first time her eyes narrowed and she became concerned. Justin’s tears began to plop onto the paper causing the semi-fresh ink to smear. Afraid of Justin’s implosion, Dr. Scott continued.
“Small traces of amyl nitrate and cocaine were also present, but not as much.” Justin blinked at her with confused blue eyes. “A speedball of sorts..” she clarified.
'Poppers'... Justin nodded and huffed out a distraught laugh.
“Holy fuck...” a pause. “Well how is he?” The question came slow and quiet.
“He’ll be all right. He’s still unconscious but he’ll be okay.” Justin remembered the cut on Brian’s forehead.
“And his head, what about his head??” This question came out faster and a little louder.
“Yes, we stitched that up as well. Four whole stitches!!” Dr. Scott smiled and patted Justin’s shoulder, a little of the tension being shaken away. “We just moved him out of the ICU to his own room, and you’ll be able to see him in just a little while.”
“Thank you..” Justin straightened Brian’s jacket on his shoulders and hastily wiped the tears that were resting on his cheeks. “Oh Dr. Scott... Can I..” Dr. Scott interrupted him before he could finish.
“We’ll get you a pillow and some blankets for tonight.” She smiled knowingly and exited the room. The blonde collapsed back into the chair he was sitting in, a tiny sob escaping his lips.
